Surrey Downs Direct Referral Scheme

Improving eye care pathways

Both our Optometrists Ross Turner and Richard Walsh are accredited to participate in the Surrey Downs Direct Referral Scheme which allows them to identify and refer patients with suspected cataracts and age-related wet macular degeneration (AMD) to specialist services.

The aim of these Schemes is to reduce unnecessary referrals to the hospital eye service and to provide improved access to service closer to the patient’s home.  Our Optometrists will discuss with you your preferred place of referral.

Who is eligible?

Patients who meet both the referral guidelines and who attend a Surrey Downs GP practice in the Dorking, East Elmbridge or Epsom localities.  If you are unsure whether your GP surgery is part of the Surrey Downs CCG we are happy to advise.

Direct Cataract Referral

This service enables our accredited Optometrists to identify cataracts in patients during their routine eye test.

The optometrist will complete an additional assessment to see if cataract surgery is appropriate. If so, the optometrist will explain what the surgery would involve and the patient can then choose where to have it carried out.

Wet AMD Referral

This service helps our accredited Optometrists to identify suspected wet AMD in patients during their routine eye test.

By urgently referring patients directly to a hospital or community clinic, further tests can be carried out and treatment can be started within two weeks if necessary. Your preferred place of referral will be discussed.
