Reflection Protection

10th June 2024

UV rays are present all year round.  We often think about protecting our eyes from direct UV but reflected UV light is just as damaging as direct UV.

According to the UV fact sheet from the World Health Organization, UV radiation is reflected or scattered to varying extents by different surfaces, e.g.

  • snow can reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation
  • dry beach sand about 15%
  • sea foam about 25%
  • grass about 3%

Even shade can’t protect your eyes against reflected UV rays.  However, the good news is that 100% UV-protective sunglasses can.

Everyone in your family, including children, should wear sunglasses while outdoors, even on cloudy days.  Over time, over exposure to UV light can cause cataracts, skin cancer and damage to the retina.  Wearing 100% UV-protective sunglasses is an easy – and stylish – way to protect your eyes when outdoors.

No matter what you are looking for this season, our Dispensing Opticians can help you choose a pair of sunglasses that ensure you get the protection you need and a style you’ll enjoy wearing.
